This past April I had the opportunity to attend a “lapping day” at High Plains Raceway (HPR) sponsored by the Audi Club Rocky Mountain Chapter. Wow! Pretty much says it all. Like many I had no idea what to expect but had plenty of questions.
Did I need a race license? NO
Did I need a race car? NO
Could I use my own car, an Audi? YES
Did I need to have my car checked before putting it on the track? YES
Did I need a track orientation before going on the track? YES
Did I need to too wear anything special for the track? YES
Did I need an instructor to show me how to be safe and have fun? YES
Was it easy? YES
You don’t need a race car or even a fast one. The car needs to be track ready with good things like tires, brakes, suspension, etc. Any good shop that specializes in the Audi brand can probably do a pre-track inspection. You need to ask and probably have a sheet that will show what was checked. I went to Peak Eurosports.
The track has a required safety orientation for drivers in the morning and usually at noon. Helmets are required. The track (HPR) now has new ones for rent and the Audi club has some for club members as well.
An instructor can take you for a few laps so you learn the line to follow, how to be safe, how to signal, how to pass and how to be passed, etc. Once comfortable you will solo.
The track has access to instructors and the Audi club has instructor members with track experience. I was fortunate to have Chris Sarian of Sarian Motorsports and Peak Eurosports. Chris was the Audi club sponsor for the event.
The track: High Plains Raceway (HPR) is 41 miles east on I-70 to the Byers exit (316) and then 17 miles east on state highway 36. Easy to see on the left. The track website www.highplainsraceway.com has a track map and a calendar of future “lapping days”.
The experience: A real rush and a fun high to drive a real race track. It will definitely get your heart rate up! One soon realizes it is not as easy as just “mashing” the go pedal. 15 turns and significant elevation changes are HARD to remember. Go as much or as little as you wish on “Lapping Day”. Learn and ask questions, this is not something everyone gets to do! But, the smile and/or grin on drivers' faces will tell you a lot.
